Routine Dental Cleanings and Treatment of Gum Disease
Dr. Gor and his staff believe having healthy gums is the first key to optimal oral health; therefore, our periodontal (gum & bone) care is of utmost priority. We customize cleanings to properly care for your specific periodontal needs.
Periodontal or gum health is classified in different levels and determines the type of cleaning needed.
Having Healthy gums is characterized by:
- Gums that are light pink in color
- Non-tender gums
- Gums do not bleed easily when you brush and/or floss
You can maintain this optimal state of health with regular routine cleanings at your dental office and with proper flossing and brushing at home.
Gingivitis is the early stage of periodontal disease and characterized by:
- Gums that are dark red (especially the edges of your gums)
- Swollen gums
- Gums that bleed easily during tooth brushing and/or flossing
The Good news is that this early stage of periodontal disease is reversible. Usually all that is needed is a regular routine professional dental cleaning and improving your daily oral hygiene routine.
Chronic Periodontitis (Gum Disease)
If gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to chronic periodontitis. In this stage of periodontal disease, the bacterial infection from plaque and tarter causes the breakdown of gum tissue so that it pulls away from the teeth forming pockets around the teeth and loss of surrounding bone support.
Chronic Periodontitis is classified in different levels of severity. Mild and moderate levels can be treated in our office with a procedure called scaling and root planing to remove the bacterial deposits from under the gums. More advanced levels of this condition are best treated at one of our recommended specialists called a Periodontist.
During your first visit with Olympic Dental, we will perform a periodontal evaluation in order to determine the type of dental cleaning that best suites your needs.
